Marta
Stemberger founded Terpsihora Dance
Company and School in Novo mesto, Slovenia, in 1989. She came to
New York in October of 1992 to study dance at the Alvin Ailey school, and she continued
her dance training at the Martha Graham
school. Her choreographies were presented at Alvin Ailey American Dance Center, Martha Graham School of Contemporary Dance,
Dance Theater Workshop, now New
York Live Arts (at the choreography workshop with Bessie
Schönberg), Evolving Arts (a program of Dance New
Amsterdam), and Omega Institute
Cafe.
After a successful solo dance performance From
the Sunny Side of the Alps, a knee injury halted her dance career. Ms.
Stemberger seized this opportunity and went back to school. She earned her BA
in Liberal Arts in 2000, and MA in Liberal Studies in 2003, both at The New School, with a focus on women studies through the lens of history
and sociology, and was a teaching assistant for undergraduate, and graduate,
courses in women’s intellectual history from 2001 through 2008.
During the summer of 2008, Ms. Stemberger was a liaison and production
manager for a poetry-eurythmy performance ONEWORD – an extended poetree by Gail Langstroth, which was presented at FringeNYC in August of 2008.
Currently, Ms. Stemberger is enrolled in the full-time training of the
movement art eurythmy at Eurythmy Spring
Valley.
